In the midst of tense relations between US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky, UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham has stated that he will work to “repair bridges.”
In a show of solidarity for Ukraine’s president in response to further criticism from Trump, Burnham made the remarks today before he was scheduled to welcome Zelensky to his official Downing Street residence, according to AFP.
In recent days, Trump surprised all parties in the nearly five-year battle by proclaiming a “energy ceasefire” and a deal to supply fuel to Russia, which is subject to severe sanctions.
Additionally, he has harshly criticised Zelensky for Ukraine’s long-range strikes on Russian energy infrastructure and suggested that he be removed from office.
Burnham told the British parliament, “As part of my job, I have to try to repair bridges so that the support comes back.”
As a result, I should exercise caution right now when establishing the foundation for reuniting people. I plan to play that role,” he continued.
Zelensky’s trip to London coincides with Ukraine’s accusations that the US is assisting Russia, claiming that Washington has hindered the Starlink satellite internet system, which it utilises for frontline logistics and battlefield communications, and neglected to alert it to impending missile strikes.
A US official informed our correspondent today that Washington’s position had “not changed,” despite Trump’s insistence yesterday that Washington was still supporting Ukraine. Additionally, the EU stated that there were “no indications” that information sharing had ceased.
Burnham told lawmakers, “I will listen to President Zelensky carefully, but he won’t be leaving Britain today empty-handed.”
Zelensky will be informed by the prime minister that Britain will expedite the supply of British lightweight multirole missiles, which Ukraine has employed against Russian jet-powered drones.
He is also anticipated to promise additional penalties against Russia.
