Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi has called on Nigerians to remain united, saying the country cannot move forward without unity.
Channels TV says that Obi spoke at the NDC Global Digital Townhall yesterday, where the former governor answered questions on issues impacting Nigerians and the party’s goals for the 2027 general elections.
He said the effects of bad governance cut across religious and ethnic lines and therefore created the need for unity across Nigeria. The NDC presidential flagbearer said:
“We need cohesion in the country. We are not one today. We are separated along ethnic lines and along religious lines. To my knowledge, no tribe buys bread cheaper; no tribe buys gasoline cheaper; no religion buys bread cheaper; no religion buys fuel cheaper.
“The poverty that today exists in our country is spread throughout the whole nation. No tribe is safer than any other. Insecurity is everywhere throughout the land. Same thing I’ve been saying.
“We need a president who will bring us together. “We need a president that will work tirelessly to secure the country,” the former Anambra State governor told the virtual meeting which went live last evening.
The statement was issued days after gunmen abducted some members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) on their way from Ibadan in Oyo State to NYSC orientation camps in Abia and Akwa Ibom states. The Corps men were attacked Thursday in Umunoha region of Imo State.
The NDC candidate in the incident condemned the abduction and questioned the government’s stand on the kidnapping.
And we are still working for the next elections? It shouldn’t. Where did they get kidnaped? To what bush did they carry them? Not in Nigeria ? Those calling and demanding N1bn [as ransom] are they calling from outside Nigeria? No.
“With the technology we have today we ought to be able to find the people who are doing bad things. If they’re in a bush in Nigeria, we should all be able to go into that bush until everybody in there is out. “We can’t go on like this,” Obi stated, urging for the bolstering of security agencies to root out criminality.
We have security outfits. They went to work. We need to make sure we provide them the logistics to work with. We have to be there with them. We have to make sure that they are appropriately hauled off and their families are looked after in case something happens to them when they are not available. “We want a president who leads from the front,” he remarked.
