Osun State University (UNIOSUN) has debuted in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2027, emerging as Nigeria’s highest-ranked state-owned university and joint ninth nationally. Africans And The Diaspora
The Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the institution, Ademola Adesoji, said on Wednesday that the 2027 ranking released today, Wednesday, September 30, placed UNIOSUN in the 1,201–1,400 bracket globally, alongside Babcock institution and the University of Nigeria, Nsukka.
The most recent ranking evaluated 2,297 universities in 118 countries and territories. Nigeria led sub-Saharan Africa with 29 universities ranked, the most of any country in the region.
Following the ranking indications, “UNIOSUN got 25.6 in Research Environment, the second highest score among the 29 ranked Nigerian universities, with Covenant University scoring 32.5.
It also got 23.6 for Teaching, ranking fifth in the country. Other ratings were 43.8 for Research Quality, 17.6 for Industry and 40.3 for International Outlook.
The report referred to UNIOSUN as a new entrant, stating that its performance in Research Environment and Teaching were good strengths and that Research Quality was an issue that needed additional improvement.
The Times Higher Education rating is based on five major pillars: Teaching, Research Environment, Research Quality, International Outlook and Industry. The 2027 methodology consists of 18 performance metrics encompassing teaching reputation, research output and quality, citations, international collaboration, industry income and patents.
The survey also said the debut of UNIOSUN in the 1,201 – 1,400 band was equally remarkable as the university rated ahead of 19 older and larger Nigerian universities.
“Out of the 29 Nigerian universities that made it to the 2027 edition, only seven were state-owned, while 19 were federal, and three were private. The article said UNIOSUN became the highest ranking state-owned university in the country as a consequence.
Reacting to the event, the Vise Chancellor of the university, Prof. Odunayo Clement Adebooye, commended the Osun State government and other stakeholders for their support and dedication to the expansion of the institution.
The institution would build on the achievement and explore efforts to boost its academic and research profile and position it for greater worldwide recognition, Adebooye added.
