The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has issued a warning to Nigerians about the purported circulation of a suspected counterfeit ORACIRE+ Toothpaste that is allegedly being distributed as the licensed ORACARE+ Toothpaste.
The agency said the alert was issued following a formal complaint and a market intelligence assessment on the extensive distribution of the suspected fake product, Daily Independent writes.
NAFDAC stated surveillance at Ojuwoye Market, Mushin, Lagos, found that the suspected counterfeit looks very much like the registered ORACARE+ Toothpaste in packaging and overall presentation, hence making it impossible for consumers to discern between the two products.
It said that counterfeit personal care items may not fulfil recognised quality and safety requirements and could pose health hazards, stressing that the origin, composition, safety and quality of the suspected ORACIRE+ Toothpaste had not been validated.
The agency said it has started surveillance and instructed its Zonal Directors and State Coordinators to probe the availability and distribution of the product and take suitable regulatory action.
TNT News reports that certain other kinds of toothpaste other from ORACARE+ Toothpaste have also been falsified by some unscrupulous forces and supplied in various markets across the country. Search Flight Deals
Oral-B toothpastes is one such product. Similarly, our correspondent’s inquiry revealed that the suspected counterfeit is strikingly similar to the registered Oral-B Toothpaste in packaging and general presentation, hence making it impossible for consumers to differentiate.
NAFDAC has advised consumers and health care providers to report suspected sales of the counterfeit toothpaste to the nearest NAFDAC office.
