The Anambra State Police Command has arrested a 20-year-old man known as Pascal Ogbogu for allegedly killing his 56-year-old father with a machete in Abatete, Idemili North Local Government Area of the state.
Preliminary information has it that the defendant reportedly attacked his father last evening and fled the scene, police said.
After a complaint of distress, police operatives from Eziowelle Police Division sprung into action and with the help of family members and members of the Abatete Vigilante mobilised to the area where they discovered the dead laying in a pool of blood with deep cut wound inflicted by a machete on his throat.
The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the death and stated that the body of the deceased has been transported to a mortuary for preservation and autopsy.
The suspect who fled the scene following the event, however, was apprehended in the early hours of August 26, 2026, through the joint efforts of the Police and certain members of the Abatete Vigilante, he said.
Ikenga said timely information and cooperation from people of the community also aided to the arrest of the culprit as citizens assisted security personnel to trace and locate him.
Commissioner of Police, CP Nnanna Oji Ama, appreciated the swift response of the security operatives and the assistance rendered by the residents of the community.
He commended the family members, community members, Police operatives and vigilante personnel for their cooperation, stressing that community participation, timely information sharing and effective collaboration between the Police and local communities, remained essential to protecting lives and property.
The CP condoled the deceased’s family and ordered the case to be handed over to the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) for further probe and detailed examination.
He said the probe will determine the circumstances surrounding the occurrence and ensure all essential information were fully ascertained.
Ama informed the family and the general public that the investigation would be carried out in a professional, comprehensive and rigorous manner in accordance with the law and that the suspect would be made to face the proper procedure after the conclusion of the inquiry.
