Arsenal kicked off the defence of their Premier League crown in imposing manner on Friday, brushing aside newly promoted Coventry City 3-0 at the Emirates Stadium.
In just 15 minutes the defending champions were ahead as Kai Havertz finished off a well-worked move to provide Mikel Arteta’s side the lead.
Eight minutes later, Bukayo Saka made it two for Arsenal and put the hosts well in charge before the interval.
Arsenal continued to dominate after the break and skipper Martin Ødegaard struck a third goal in the 49th minute, killing off any possibility of a Coventry comeback.
It was the perfect way for Arsenal to start their defence of the Premier League crown. The Gunners were especially good in the early stages, mixing aggressive pressing with rapid attacking plays that caused the visitors problems time and again.
Another to impress on his Premier League bow was new acquisition Christos Tzolis, who helped create Arsenal’s second goal and was an added offensive outlet down the left.
Coventry, in their first Premier League match since 2001, found it hard to cope with Arsenal’s aggression but escaped additional damage after the third goal. Jack Rudoni, who was brought on as a substitute, almost grabbed a consolation late on, but his shot was stopped by David Raya.
It was a tough comeback to the top level for Frank Lampard’s Coventry, who got promoted after winning the Championship last season. But Lampard pleaded with his players to take something out of the experience as they became accustomed to life in the Premier League.
The impressive victory builds on the momentum from Arsenal’s 3-0 Community Shield win over Manchester City and reinforces expectations that Arteta’s team will once again be among the main contenders for the crown.
The triumph also took Arteta to 150 Premier League wins as Arsenal manager, highlighting the significance of an opening nite display that suggested the champions are ready for another gruelling title struggle.
