Minister of Works, David Umahi, has disclosed that certain people persuaded President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to sack him from office following the death of one of his staff members, Mary Habila, but the president resisted and told him to keep focused on his job. State
Umahi stated in a video circulating on social media that President Tinubu has rejected calls for his dismissal and instead encouraged him to continue building road infrastructure across the country, Daily Trust reports.
They wanted the president to fire me but he told me to continue developing roads for Nigerians’, the minister claimed.
Habila was reportedly killed on June 27 at Umahi’s rural residence in Uburu, Ohaozara Local Government Area of Ebonyi State.
She was the minister’s private nurse.
The circumstances surrounding her death have caused controversy, with different reports arising concerning the reason of her death.
Some reports said she was among the minister’s entourage in another position, a claim that has not been proven.
The public controversy has also spilt over into how her remains are handled. The Nigeria Police had requested an autopsy to identify the cause of death, but this was rejected by Habila’s parents who said it was against their cultural and personal values.
The police have not released the findings of their investigation into the incident.
“God surprised me when people took the death of one of my best workers and began to play politics with it, Umahi said in the video clip.
“They suggested I should be sacked by the president. Why is he going to fire me? For what? A man I worked with died. So I’ve got to be fired? But the president confounded them all. “Go and build more roads, Dave,” he said.
