Bala Wakili, an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), was killed in a gunfight between security personnel and alleged bandits in Sokoto State’s Kebbe Local Government Area.
According to Daily Trust, the deceased officer was a member of the Kebbe Police Division.
Our correspondent was informed by sources that the attackers broke into the villages of Girkau and Zugu at around 4 p.m. on Monday and stole an unknown quantity of animals.
One of the sources claims that as the bandits were leaving Zugu village, a joint security force made up of police officers, soldiers, and Sokoto Community Guard Corps members set up an ambush for them.
The subsequent gunfight, according to the informant, went on for over an hour.
The bandits and security personnel engaged in a ferocious gunfight, but the attackers were numerous. Eventually, they overcame the squad, killed ASP Bala Wakili, and set two patrol cars on fire, one from the Sokoto Community Guard Corps and the other from the police, according to the source.
According to a security guard who spoke on condition of anonymity, the incident was confirmed and the dead officer’s body was found and buried today.
A police officer “paid the supreme price” while performing their duties, according to DSP Ahmad Rufa’i, the spokesperson for the Sokoto State Police Command, who also verified the attack.
He told the locals that the situation had been brought under control and stated that more security guards had been sent to the impacted areas.
Security organisations were trying to find the perpetrators and stop more events in the vicinity, Rufa’i continued.
