Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), has urged lawmakers and his critics to discuss issues hurting the country and not him.
Obi spoke in an exclusive interview with Channels Television, which was aired last night.
Reacting to opposition lawmakers invoking his name during interviews, Obi remarked, “Well, it’s not about what they are discussing about me.
“Name calling doesn’t make me feel anything. But they are not talking about things we are meant to talk about. They are talking about what I think is irrelevant.
“We have a situation where over 180 million Nigerians are living in poverty and the World Bank has warned of dire hunger. These are the issues that we should be debating, not discussing Peter Obi. I am not Nigeria’s problem. “If they want to debate on anything, let them debate on how to pull our people out of poverty, out of hunger and secure the country.”
The former governor of Anambra State said that Nigeria is suffering myriads of difficulties and as such, critics should focus on addressing them instead of complaining about him.
The NDC’s presidential flag bearer contested the 2023 elections but lost to President Bola Tinubu.
But Obi’s objective is to see a better nation no matter the criticisms that he is anxious for the number one seat in Nigeria.
“I have always said I am not desperate to become Nigerian president. I want Nigeria to work so much. “So if it is working I will support whatever that work is,” stated the NDC chief.
“I want to see a country where I keep saying it every day a child of nobody can be somebody without knowing anybody; where we can pull people out of poverty; where young ones will have the opportunity to live, get a job, be an entrepreneur and participate in what young people do all over the world.”
“Seeing Nigeria better is not about occupying a position, it is my ambition for the presidency to unite the country,” he said.
“I’m running because I believe I can fix it. I will bring the country together. “I can do it to show an example of what can be done,” said Obi.
The NDC flagbearer said he had undertaken multiple humanitarian missions and interventions in Northern Nigeria adding that he had always stood with communities afflicted by conflict and natural catastrophes.
