The Federal Fire Service (FFS) Kano State Command has rescued six persons alive when a portion of a structure collapsed at Whitefield Rice Mills Processing Company. The plant is in Gezawa Local Government Area of Kano State
The State Controller, Mr Kazeem Sholadaye stated this in a statement signed by the Service’s Public Relations Officer, Al-Hassan Kanti, in Kano today.
His principal had told Kanti: “We got a distress call from one Mr Johnson at around 6.45p.m. on Monday evening.
“As soon as we got the report, we immediately sent out our firefighters and rescue personnel from the Danzaki Fire Station.
The rescue squad utilised shovels, grinding machines and other equipment to clear debris and reach the trapped individuals.
“Thanks to the professionalism and coordinated efforts of our personnel, six persons were rescued alive from the collapsed building.
Sholadaye also said that there was no loss of life in the incident, adding that the collapse was because to overloading of store items in a section of the company.
He said that the rapid arrival of the fire fighters saved property worth around N15 million, while property worth N10 million was destroyed.
The controller called on inhabitants, property owners and developers to ensure buildings’ structural integrity, avoid putting too much burden on structures and report any indicators of structural distress to authorities.

There is the need for constant structural inspection and rigorous compliance to building safety requirements to avoid building collapse and protect lives and property, he said.
