The Organising Secretary of the National Union of Road Transport Workers, Lagos State Council, Toba Ajiboye, popularly known as Ijaya, was killed by unknown gunmen in Lagos.
He was reportedly attacked on Sunday night on his way home from his native neighbourhood in Fadeyi, The PUNCH reports.
The perpetrators intercepted his vehicle along the Ikorodu Road axis and opened fire, leaving the automobile peppered with bullet holes, sources say.
Photos and videos of his white vehicle riddled with gunshot holes on the windscreen and other sections of the body have been spreading on social media after the incident was caught on camera.
Initial reports stated that Ajiboye and other occupants of the vehicle escaped the attack but were shot.
But later reports said the union official died of his injuries.
Lagos NURTW Chairman, Alhaji Mustapha Adekunle commonly known as Sego said Ajiboye was a devoted ally and trusted friend and expressed regret over his loss, reacting to the tragedy.
Sego, in a memorial posted on his Facebook page today, said he was grieved by the death, stressing that Ajiboye’s passion and dedication to the union and its political structure would be deeply missed.
I am really shocked and heartbroken to hear about the tragic death of Comrade Toba Ajiboye. “It is hard to come to terms with the loss of such a loyal, dependable and committed ally,” he wrote.
Sego called the late union leader “more than an ally” and said he remained a pillar to TeamSego and SegoNation.
“Comrade Toba Ajiboye, the Organising Secretary of the NURTW Lagos State Council was not just a comrade, but an ally, a trusted friend, a man of unwavering loyalty and commitment, a true pillar of TeamSego and SegoNation. “His friendship, his unwavering support and his selfless dedication to the union over the years will forever be engraved in my heart,” he said.
The NURTW chieftain also expressed his sympathies to the family, relatives and members of the NURTW.
My sincere sympathies to his family, friends and the entire NURTW family. He continued, “May the Almighty God forgive his shortcomings, grant him eternal rest and give us all the strength and fortitude to bear this painful and irreparable loss.”
Sego paid his last respects, saying, “Farewell, my dear friend. Your loyalty, friendship and constant support will always be engraved in my heart. “I will never forget the bond we had and you will be missed so much.”
