The man, simply identified as Success, was said to have died from injuries he got after he was tortured by some operatives of Ogun State security outfit, So-Safe Corps, along the Coca-Cola Road, in the Oju-Ore region of the state.
PUNCH claims that the incident happened following an argument between Success and his mother on Saturday. Ota Gossip discovered about the event through a Facebook post yesterday.
The post said that Success’s mother reported the matter to the So-Safe officers and they arrested him.
The statement said that instead of the security staff giving him Success to the police, he was reportedly taken to an uncompleted building and tortured.
“The incident, according to reports in the community, started after a misunderstanding between Success, his mother and his younger brother at their home. Success was seen bleeding and was reportedly injured in the head in the brawl.
“Then, after the mother’s call, the So-Safe security men were invited to come to the rescue. Social media videos and eyewitness testimony show the young man was eventually carried away from the location.
“However, claims from the community have it that he was not taken into official custody but was allegedly taken to an abandoned building in the Oju Ore axis where he was physically assaulted.”
Another Facebook user, Temitope Adeniyi, said the security officers allegedly battered Success to death.
“His mother reported him to the So-Safe, because he was fighting with his mother. “The next thing, they took him to an uncompleted building and beat him to death,” Adeniyi wrote.
The So-Safe Corps spokesperson, Adegunwa Adegbuyi, confirmed the event in a telephone contact with our correspondent on Monday, adding that the policemen had been handed over to the police.
Adegbuyi condemned the officers’ behavior but stated they went outside the usual operational protocols of the outfit.
“The mother called us to intervene and some of our ad hoc staff went. They are supposed to turn back. Unfortunately they took the law into their own hands.
“As soon as the case came up, we had to hand them over to the Nigerian Police Force because the Commandant does not condone anything that has to do with human rights abuse.
“We handed the first culprit and after some hours we handed the second culprit to the police for necessary prosecution. “We are working with the police in synergy to ensure justice is done,” Adegbuyi said.
He decided that the So-Safe Commander, Soji Ganzalo, had always advised his men against violating human rights and interfering in civic concerns.
Meanwhile, the Ogun State Police Command spokesperson, Babaseyi Oluseyi, has not reacted to an enquiry submitted to him on the topic as of the time of recording this story.
It was reported on Saturday that the Imo State Police Command detained three students of the Federal University of Technology, Owerri, Imo State, for the suspected murder of a 21-year-old undergraduate, Chinedu Christogonus.
The deceased, a 100-level student of cybersecurity, was allegedly battered to death on Saturday by members of the university’s Man O’ War organisation for allegedly taking N13,500.
The incident had sparked turmoil in the university with students going on the rampage burning buildings and destroying other property on the campus.
