Anambra: Police launches investigation into death of 22-year-old barber

The Anambra State, Commissioner of Police, Mr. John Abang, has ordered for a full-scale investigation into the death of a 22-year-old man who was killed on Wednesday while running away from a police team enforcing the nation-wide curfew put in place by President Muhammadu Buhari.

Emerging details from the police has it that the deceased, Anthony Okafor, was hit by a shuttle bus with registration number ACA 325 ZE at Nkwo market area of Enugwu-Ukwu, Njikoka Local Government Area of the state.

A statement by the State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Haruna Mohammed, reads in part: “On the 20/05/2020 at 8:30pm, there was a report of fatal motor vehicle accident along Nkwo Enugwu Ukwu, Njikoka LGA of Anambra State involving a shuttle bus with registration no ACA 325 ZW driven by one Michael Obi Chukwuebuka of Obeagu Osili of Enugu-Ukwu.

“The accident occurred when one Anthony Okafor aged 22 years while trying to cross the highway was suddenly hit by the aforementioned vehicle during the rush hour of the enforcement of curfew.

“Victim was rushed to Beke Memoirial Hospital Nimo by a Police Patrol team where he was confirmed dead by a medical doctor on duty and corpse deposited at same Hospital morgue for post-motem examination.The driver was arrested and investigation is ongoing.

“However, following the incident, aggrieved youth in the area went on rampage [May 21, 2020] and attempted to set ablaze Nimo Divisional Police headquarters but were persuaded to disperse through the joint efforts of the Police and community stakeholders.”

Mohammed said the Commissioner of Police, “who was deeply saddened by the unfortunate incident, has ordered for a full-scale investigation into the matter.

“The CP further assured the public that justice would be done in the case and the outcome of Police investigation shall be made public in due course.”
