Troops from Operation Hadin Kai stopped a planned terrorist attack on Kukareta in the North East, killing at least 24 rebels and getting back a stash of weapons and ammo.
The military claimed the attack happened early Thursday morning, starting just after midnight and ending at 3:00 a.m. It was quickly stopped by troops in Sector 2 of the Joint Task Force.
Lieutenant Colonel Sani Uba, the Media Information Officer for Operation Hadin Kai, said that the troops mounted a powerful offensive defensive response that forced the assailants to retreat in a disorganized way.
Soldiers found 18 AK 47 rifles, three general-purpose machine guns, two PKT automatic anti-aircraft weapons, three RPG tubes, two mortar tubes, four hand grenades, 18 AK 47 magazines, and a lot of belted 7.62mm ammunition during the operation.
The military said that two soldiers were hurt in action but are now stable. One armored tank was also damaged during the fight.
Troops are currently following up along the paths that the retreating insurgents used, where they found blood and medical supplies that had been left behind, which suggests that more people have died.
The military said that the operation shows how strong and ready for battle the forces are in the current counterinsurgency fight. They also said that they will keep up the effort to get rid of terrorist groups across the theater of operations.
