Ralph Nwosu, the founder and immediate past National Chairman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has said he is worried about what he calls possible government meddling in the party’s internal affairs. He warned that this might hurt Nigeria’s democracy.
Nwosu said this in response to recent events in the party, especially those involving Nafiu Bala. He said that Bala had been at earlier meetings between ADC stakeholders and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), which made him wonder what his present position and participation in the ongoing conflict were.
Nwosu remarked, “I’m worried that this government is using him to attack our country’s democracy,” which suggests that recent activities related to Bala may not be completely free of outside political influence.
His statements come at a time when the ADC is having a serious leadership crisis that has gotten a lot of attention around the country because of conflicting assertions about the party’s structure and legality.
Nwosu didn’t give any concrete proof to back up the claim, but he did say that people should be careful and follow democratic ideals. He also said that political intervention in party management might set a bad example.
The ADC has been having problems with its own members lately, with different groups fighting for leadership roles. This has led to actions from INEC and the courts.
At the time of writing, neither the federal government nor the people identified have officially responded to Nwosu’s charges.
