Saif al-Islam Gaddafi, the son of Libya’s former leader Col. Muammar Gaddafi, has been killed.
Gaddafi was shot and killed on Tuesday, February 3, in the western Libyan city of Zintan, where he had lived for the preceding ten years.
The leader of his political team told the Libyan News Agency on Tuesday that the 53-year-old had died. He was once thought to be his father’s heir apparent.
His sister told Libyan TV that he had died close to the border with Algeria. She didn’t say how he died.
On Tuesday, Khaled al-Mishri, the former head of the High State Council in Tripoli, which is an internationally recognized government entity, asked for a “urgent and transparent investigation” into the k!lling on social media.
Saif al-Islam Gaddafi never held an official job in Libya, but he was long thought to be the most powerful and feared person in the country after his father, who controlled Libya from 1969 until he was overthrown and killed.killed during a revolt in 2011.
In 2011, Gaddafi was caught and put in jail in Zintan after trying to escape from Libya after the opposition took over Tripoli.
He was let go in 2017 as part of a national amnesty.
