Wilfred Ndidi, the captain of the Super Eagles, lost his father, Sunday Ndidi, who died today in a car accident in Delta State.
Reports say that Sunday Ndidi, a former military commander, was in a crash in Umunede, Delta State.
He was taken to a hospital in nearby Agbor, where physicians later verified that he had died.
Beşiktaş, Ndidi’s Turkish club, broke the sad news. They said they were very sorry for the loss of their midfielder’s father.
“May Allah have mercy on the dead.” “We send our deepest condolences to our footballer Wilfred Ndidi, his family, and all of his loved ones,” the club stated in a message on X.
Ndidi just took over as captain of Nigeria from William Troost-Ekong. He guided the Super Eagles to a third-place finish at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco. This was a big deal for him because it was his first goal for the national team.
During the competition, Ndidi also talked about how much he loved his father and how much he admired former Nigeria captain Kanu Nwankwo. He did this while talking about what inspired him to celebrate his goal against Tunisia.
Fans, teammates, and people in the Nigerian football community have been sending messages of condolence.
