Sources close to the investigation revealed yesterday that Burkina Faso’s previous transitional president, who is thought to have been behind several coup plots in the country, was detained in Togo and sent back home.
Last week, Paul-Henri Sandaogo Damiba was arrested in Lome and then tried for “attempted destabilization” in Burkina Faso. After that, he was brought to the airport, according to one of his acquaintances.
According to AFP, a regional security source and a Togolese source close to the investigation both verified this information.
Some sources said he would probably be sent to Burkina Faso, but no one knew where he was going.
As of late yesterday, officials in Ouagadougou had not yet spoken anything about the issue.
In January 2022, a coup led by the former lieutenant-colonel overthrew President Roch Marc Christian Kabore.
But eight months later, he was overthrown in the coup that put military leader Captain Ibrahim Traore in charge.
Since then, Burkina Faso’s military junta has said that Damiba has been behind various coup plots and assassination attempts against Traore.
It alleged earlier this month that Damiba and his co-conspirators had planned a series of “targeted assassinations” of military and civilian leaders on January 3, “starting with the neutralization of comrade Ibrahim Traore.”
