The 13-year relationship between Olamide Lamidi and her boyfriend, Saheed Lamidi, has ended in the Grade A Customary Court in Mapo, Ibadan, Oyo State.
Olamide, who took Saheed to court, said he was a drunk and a thug.
She said that he would hit her every time he came home intoxicated late at night.
The plaintiff also said that they battled much of the night because he continuously wanted intercourse, but she didn’t want to have sex with him.
She said he would hit her until she was black and blue and then throw her out into the street.
Olamide told the court that Saheed didn’t take care of her or their kids and that he only spent his money on alcohol.
The complaint also alleged that they lived in eight different houses during their 13 years of marriage because he was continuously fighting with their landlords and tenants.
She said that Saheed took the law into his own hands and would come to her store to fight her and break her things.
She said that he wouldn’t change even after the police arrested him and held him for days, asking him to write an undertaking.
Olamide told the court that she was done with their marriage and asked for it to end.
She also asked for custody of their kids, saying that her husband should be responsible for taking care of them.
Saheed said he had changed, even though he acknowledged to drinking and fighting.
He asked the court not to end their marriage because of their kids.
Olamide said in her testimony, “My husband is careless and beats me all the time.”
“We didn’t have a wedding, and he didn’t pay for my bride.”
“He doesn’t have any responsibilities toward me or our kids. He just spends his money on booze.
“Saheed comes home drunk every night and messes up the whole house.
“My husband often asks for sex when he’s drunk, and when I say no, he beats me black and blue.”
“I don’t want to have sex with him, so I don’t let him have sex with me.”
“He usually sends me out into the street when we fight without caring about my safety.”
“We have lived in eight different residences since we got married 13 years ago. This is because my husband acts badly, which makes him and the landlords always be at each other’s throats.
“My husband comes to my store to attack me and break my things.
“I once called the police on him and they arrested him. He had to submit an undertaking, but he went back to his old ways.
“Lord, I’ve had enough of how careless my husband is. I pray that you discontinue our connection.
“I also ask the court to give me custody of our kids, but make my husband liable for their food, schooling, and medical care.
“I also ask the court to stop him from threatening me or getting in the way of my private life.”
Saheed replied, “My lord, I do not agree to divorce.”
“I drink and hit my wife, but I’ve changed.
“If we get divorced, our kids will be hurt.”
Mrs. S.M. Akintayo, the court president, said that their relationship was full of domestic violence when she gave her verdict.
She said that they had lived together for 13 years but were not married.
She said that there was no traditional or official wedding for them, and no dowry was paid.
Akintayo also said that Saheed never disputed being a drunk and a thug, and that he refused to change even after signing an agreement.
Akintayo ended their relationship because of this.
She went on to say that the court’s main concern was the children’s best interests and that it was right to give them to the person who would take care of their well-being.
She then gave the plaintiff their children and told the defendant to take care of them, with food, education, and medical needs coming first.
Akintayo told the defendant to provide their kids N15,000 a month to help them eat.
She also said that the plaintiff must let the defendant see their kids every last Saturday of the month.
She told them to have this meeting at a nuclear site.
She made it clear that the defendant could not have harassed or hurt the plaintiff in any way.
Both were told to keep the peace.
