After a patient died following a hernia procedure, authorities closed an unlicensed clinic in the Kapwa, Gaube Community of Kuje Area Council.
According to the Nigerian Tribune, Dada’s Clinic and Maternity Ltd was closed by the Private Health Establishments Registration and Monitoring Committee (PHERMC) after it was discovered to be operating unregistered and performing medical treatments in hazardous settings.
The facility, which was found to be a rented flat without necessary healthcare facilities, was located along the major road that leads to the neighborhood. Following reports of poor medical practices, an inspection team led by the Director of the Medical and Diagnostics Department carried out the raid on the mandate of Dr. Adedolapo Fasawe, Mandate Secretary of the Health and Environment Secretariat.
Three patients were admitted to the institution during the inspection, and they were promptly moved to Kuje General Hospital for appropriate medical treatment.
After more research, it was discovered that the clinic was in poor condition, without adequate windows, doors, and restrooms, and was being utilized as a medical facility in an unhygienic expansion.
Mr. Sabiu, the operator, has been taken into custody and turned over to the police for additional inquiry.
After a village elder passed away after undergoing hernia surgery at the clinic, public indignation ensued. According to reports, a number of individuals had to seek emergency care elsewhere after narrowly surviving surgeries.
In response to the incident, FCT Minister Nyesom Wike emphasized the government’s strong position against unregistered clinics and denounced the presence of illicit healthcare institutions in Abuja.
“We cannot permit illegal facilities to endanger the lives of locals. Every medical facility needs to have the appropriate accreditation, Wike said.
He also promised to close these businesses in order to protect the public’s health.
