Mr. Tunde Azeez Disco has resigned as the Executive Chairman of Agege Local Government in Lagos State. He said he was leaving because he was having ongoing health problems.
The Guardian says that the former chairman sent his resignation letter to the Agege Local Government Legislative Arm.
He said that his health had a big effect on how well he could do his official tasks.
The legislative house readily agreed with the decision, even though they knew Azeez Disco was dedicated to public service.
After a long discussion, everyone agreed to accept the resignation right away.
The council wished the departed chairman well in his future endeavors. The event also showed how important it is for public leaders to put their own health and well-being first.
The Vice Chairman of Agege Local Government is Ganiyu Obasa. His father, Mudashiru Obasa, is the Speaker of the Lagos State Assembly.
In May, people in Agege, sponsored by the Presidential Campaign Council (PCC), asked President Bola Tinubu to step in and help with the Agege local government poll.
They said that Obasa planned to put his surrogates up as candidates in the local government and council elections.
After the announcement of candidates for the chairmanship and vice chairmanship of the Agege Local Government and Orile-Agege Local Council Development Area (LCDA), angry residents claimed that Obasa personally chose the people who would represent the area.
They stated that there was no internal democracy or group engagement in the process.
Kamardeen Sabitu, head of the PCC for Agege and Orile-Agege, told the media that Obasa tried everything he could to change the political system in the area for his own gain.
People who were protesting held signs that said “Red Card, Obasa O to ge” (it’s enough). They also sang songs like “Enough is Enough, this suffering is enough, Tinubu, save us.”
Sabitu went on to say that the people had been politically ignored for years because of Obasa. He remembered that the movement against forced candidates started in 2018, when one of the demonstrators died and 11 others were put in jail.
“There is no real democracy in Agege.” We have been fighting against Obasa’s influence since 2018. We thank everyone who is standing up to this political pressure. Sabitu added, “One person can’t control Agege politics.”
He stressed that the group is still loyal to the All Progressives Congress (APC) and appreciates the party’s leadership, but they would not accept candidates that are forced on them without adequate deliberation.
