Covid-19 lockdown: Dorcas Generation sends palliatives to widows in Imo

2
Seeing how widows get maltreated in our some Nigerian culture, Dorcas Generation Initiative was born. Our activities began in 2001 with the founder, Amara Blessing Nwosu hosting widows every quarter of the year in Lagos, Nigeria. Her purpose was to address the psychological and material needs of these women in the best ways that she could because of societal stigma against widows and their children.
In 2010 she officially registered Dorcas Generation Initiative with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) of Nigeria. Activities to reach these widowed women took a more serious and result-focused approach. So far, the initiative have provided food, shelter, scholarships, community boreholes, libraries, and soft loans for business to over 300 widows and their children. “With the help of our partner-attorneys, we have fought for and won justice for some of these widows against diverse injustices from wicked relatives” said the convener Amara Nwosu.
The positive impacts of our social works leaves me with a strong desire to do more with willing volunteers ready to carry on the task ahead. My dream is to build a skill acquisition centers in different African communities to enable younger widows become more independent and entrepreneurial.
In consideration of the Covid-19 pandemic, and knowing that these widows would be in their homes with no one looking out for them, DGI decided to touch their lives by giving a sum of N25,000 each to the 20 of them currently with the organization in a rural community of Imo State. We don’t just take care of their physical wellbeing, we take care of their psychological and spiritual needs. They gather to pray, get counsel, and study the Bible together, thereby creating a stronger bond amongst themselves.
DGI has touched lives of widows and orphans in Lagos, Bayelsa, Anambra, Imo, Nassarawa, and Enugu states of Nigeria from 2010 till date.
we have recently partnered with some organizations here in the USA and will be focusing on refugee widows and their children. These groups are in dire need of help right now, to help them fend for their lives while they integrate themselves into the American society. We will be requiring lots of support and funding to enable us reach out to them.
Next year, we will be reaching out to widowed women in communities of East and Central African countries.
Speaking about her passion for her work on these missions she said, “The only time I find joy and true fulfillment is when I work for humanity. Many people keep wondering why I don’t want to monetize everything I have going for me. My simple answer is that it will be wrong if I do, helping as much widows, orphans, vulnerable persons find peace, security, fulfilment and dramatic change in their lives by GOD through me is my goal. It’s not about money; it’s about being an angel in my generation, being my neighbours keeper and leaving a legacy through my free counseling and Dorcas generation Initiative. Fulfillment doesn’t come from how much you have in the bank; I’ve been there. True fulfillment comes from knowing that I am a voice for the voiceless.
