Residents of Osun flee as communal conflict heats up : Military steps in
After deadly clashes between the communities of Ilobu and Ifon in Osun State, many people have been forced to flee their homes.
Our correspondent, who visited the Ojutu area of Ilobu yesterday, observed residents of Ilobu and Ifon moving out of the affected areas in large numbers, reports The PUNCH.
The state government has been evacuating corps members from the affected areas, as our correspondent has reported.
The entrances to the two neighbourhoods were guarded by soldiers, Department of State Services agents, and police officers.
Tajudeen Oyasope, an Ilobu resident, said he and his family had to evacuate the area because of the rising tensions overnight.
He declared, “My family and I are leaving the area where the racial tensions have been rising. While the rest of my family leaves, I plan to stay and see how things develop.
“The fight got so intense overnight. As a result, neither of us got any rest. Heavy gunfire was audible all around us. I have decided to relocate my family so that we won’t become collateral damage in this conflict.
Another source, a volunteer named Cynthia, added. To quote one of my fellow corps members: “I am serving in Ifon, and because of the fight, all of us, serving in the town, are being moved out to another place.”
According to the official spokesperson for the Osun state police, Yemisi opalola, a patrol van was lost in the mayhem.
They said we were picking sides. The van belonging to the Monitoring Section that was donated to us was unfortunately destroyed in a fire. Four of our men have been shot and are currently in the hospital. One of the victims was the Ilobu Divisional Police Officer. He took a bullet to the hand. However, praise be to God, everyone seems to be improving under treatment. When our men arrived to mediate, they ambushed the police.
The governor of Osun State, Ademola Adeleke, imposed a new curfew (6am to 6pm) on the fighting communities on Wednesday.
Human and vehicular movement is to be restricted during the curfew until further notice,” read a statement released by Kolapo Alimi, the Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment. This is to forestall attempts of destruction of lives and properties during this period, because of the land dispute.”
