According to Vice Chancellor Prof. Abdul-Rasheed Na’allah of the University of Abuja, all prospective students will be required to submit to a drug test.
According to Vanguard, Na’allah announced this partnership during the 27th pre-convocation briefing held today in Abuja. The institution is collaborating with NDLEA to assist and rehabilitate students who are involved in drug abuse.
He argued that determining students’ drug use before trying to help them quit was counterproductive.
However, he assured the audience that drug-abusing students would not be expelled from school, but rather rehabilitated with the help of the NDLEA.
At the convocation on Saturday, October 7, the vice chancellor announced that 7,128 undergraduates would be receiving diplomas.
There will be 100 Ph.D.s, 326 MAs, and 346 MPS recipients among the graduates, he said.
There will be 40 first-class graduates, 474 second-class uppers, 944 second-class lowers, 174 third-class and one-pass graduates, he said.
But he said the university would no longer accept Pass degrees.
Prof. Toyin Falola of the University of Texas at Houston, he said, would receive an Honorary Doctor of Letters from the university for his contributions to the growth and development of the university and other universities in Africa.
The vice chancellor also mentioned that beginning this academic year, students will be required to take Russia Language as part of the university’s core curriculum.
He explained that the goal was to provide students with access to fresh information.
The university has expanded its international reach by providing instruction in a variety of languages, such as Japanese, French, and Portuguese.
Though efforts are being made to fully incorporate some foreign languages as degree programmes, the university has mandated that all students take and pass a foreign language as part of the General Studies curriculum.
We’re going to add Russian to our list of available languages. One of these languages is required to be offered and passed by students,” he said.
He acknowledged the university’s efforts to fulfil its mission, noting that it had begun fundraising among alumni and philanthropists and had also begun seeking out foundations that could assist in sponsoring research, training, and other activities.
He also revealed that 26 new degree programmes had been approved by the National Universities Commission (NUC).
He claims that new classes will be available to students beginning with the 2023–2024 school year.
Nursing, media studies, pharmacy, hospitality management, agricultural engineering, and many other fields are covered.
