BREAKING: Another coup in Africa, Another president overthrown
President Ali Bongo, who was declared the winner of Saturday’s election, has been deposed in a military coup in Gabon.
In an election that the opposition claimed was heavily contested, Bongo, who took power after the death of his father in 2009, was reelected for a third term.
The BBC reported that soldiers in Gabon had announced their takeover of the government on national television.
The election held on Saturday was also declared null and void by the coup leaders.
This new turn of events coincides with ongoing efforts to address the illegal removal of Niger Republic’s democratically elected president.
Although they have already condemned the coup in Niger, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the African Union (AU) have not yet responded to the unfolding crisis in Gabon as of the time this report was written.
