NANS Protest School Fees Hike Of 300%, Unaceptable says NANS
On Friday, students at Ambrose Alli University in Ekpoma, Edo State, staged a demonstration in response to a 300 percent increase in tuition.
The national student body protested the hike and called for the resignation of the university’s acting vice chancellor, Professor Sonnie Adagbonyin, at the Edo State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists.
NANS Vice President for Intercampus Affairs Vanessa Egheahie has threatened to relocate the organization’s headquarters to the university if the state government does not reinstate the previous fee structure. Egheahie argued that the new fees would be unaffordable for students from low-income families.
According to her, the new fees would put the cost of a law degree at N741,500 (up from N185,000) and the cost of a medical degree at N638,000 (down from N216,500).
In addition, she said, “We are angry because the Edo State Government and the AAU Special Intervention Team have increased the school fees of AAU students by over 360 per cent.” Those who have contributed to the school’s improved facilities have earned the right to raise tuition.
When this fee was increased, we went to them and pleaded that they should consider the poor ones, as many students are the ones sponsoring their education and cannot afford these exorbitant fees,” said Isaac Ogieva, the Secretary General of NANS, Zone B. There is no guarantee that you will find work after you graduate. How are low-income families supposed to come up with N700,000 or N600,000 for school expenses?
