The Labour Party (LP) in Lagos State has declared its intention to contest the results of Saturday’s Governorship and House of Assembly elections.
Pastor Dayo Ekong, the chairman of the Lagos State LP, announced the party’s position during a press conference in Lagos on Tuesday, describing the APC’s election victory as temporary.
According to her, the state’s gubernatorial and legislative elections on Saturday failed every democratic test, and the party was prepared to seek redress.
According to Ekong, the elections were marred by massive disruptions and violence against party loyalists and agents.
The chairman, who stated that the election was not free, fair, or credible, expressed confidence that the judiciary would make the right decision.
“There was a lack of credibility, fairness, and freedom. I can assure you that we will seek redress; we will do whatever is necessary to obtain justice.
She stated that the party would also file complaints with INEC, the police, and the military regarding the brutal attacks against some LP members.
Ekong stated that if the election and its associated violence went unchallenged, it would set a bad precedent because the nation’s democratic process had progressed beyond that point.
The chairperson stated that violence and threats prevented elections from taking place in numerous polling places throughout the state.
“On that day, ballot boxes were stolen and burned in some locations, and all manner of evil occurred,” she said.
Ekong urged Nigerians, particularly young people who desired a better nation, not to give up.
However, the chairperson stated that it was untrue that the party was inciting violence, stating that LP would never incite anyone, especially the youths for whom it desired a better future, to engage in illegal activity.
