7 policemen arrested for corruption in Edo
Seven operatives of Edo Police Command have been arrested and undergoing investigation over alleged involvement in various corruption practices.
The Command said this in a statement by its Deputy Public Relations Officer, Jennifer Iwegbu on Friday while announcing the arrest of a policeman seen in an online video making rounds on social media engaging in an extortion conversation with a road user identified as Arc Bolu.
She noted that the erring operative caught in the viral video, Police Constable Victor Osabuohign, has been arrested, detained, and is currently undergoing investigation.
She listed the other operatives who have also been arrested on the grounds of official corruption and are undergoing investigations while awaiting disciplinary actions as ASP God’spower Ijebu, Inspectors Ebatamole Philip, Ademola Benjamin, Inaite Vincent, Robert Esikise and Adefaye Samuel.
She also the Police Command has set up an Ad-Hoc committee to checkmate the ugly incidents of corruption in the state.
The Committee which is headed by Assistant Commissioner of Police, Operations, ACP James Chu, has the mandate to investigate and met out relevant disciplinary actions on such erring officers.
Her statement reads: Following incessant reports of cases of extortion of members of the public by police operatives along the Benin/Ore express way, Edo State Police Commissioner, Abutu Yaro, has set up an Ad-Hoc committee to checkmate the ugly incident.
“The attention of the Edo State Police Command has been drawn to an online video making rounds on twitter where a Police Personnel was seen engaging in an extortion conversation with a road user identified as Arc. Bolu on the social media platform.
“The Command wishes to state that the Commissioner of Police, Edo State Command, CP Abutu Yaro, fdc, has set up an Ad-Hoc committee headed by the Assistant Commissioner of Police, Operations, ACP James Chu with phone number 08035511263 and the Command’s Provost Marshall CSP Avanrenren Godwin with phone number 08058813590 as the Deputy Chairman of the committee.
“The need for the committee is to checkmate all cases of official corruption of officers and men of the command, investigate and met out relevant disciplinary actions on such erring officers.”
Other operatives who have also been arrested on the grounds of official corruption and are undergoing investigations while awaiting disciplinary actions includes ASP God’spower Ijebu, Inspectors Ebatamole Philip, Ademola Benjamin, Inaite Vincent, Robert Esikise and Adefaye Samuel.
Meanwhile, the State Commissioner of Police, Abutu Yaro, has called on the people of Edo to make judicious use of the phone numbers.
This is even as he urged all members of the public that have been victims of official corruption, extortion and checking of phones or have any other form of grievances against corruption from officers and men of the Command to forward their complaints to the aforementioned phone numbers.
He assured that their complaint would aid the committee in their investigations and justice been served accordingly.
Yaro further urges the general public to go about their daily activities as law abiding citizens and do not hesitate to report any misconduct of any personnel of the Command whether on duty or off duty.
