Court sentences three to death in Niger for culpable homicide

A Minna High Court in Niger State has sentenced three men, Mohammed Ibrahim Soja, Sani Idris Boka and Babangida Gido, to death by hanging after they were found guilty of a 10-count charge bordering on culpable homicide.

They also bagged life sentence for rape and 10 years imprisonment for causing grievous hurt, among other sentences.

Justice Mohammed Adishetu Mohammed, after taking the testimonies and exhibits brought against the accused found them guilty of all the charges brought by the police.

Justice Mohammed said the evidences and prosecuting witnesses in the case were consistent and explanative while the evidence of prosecuting witnesses were believable.

She held that all the ingredients of the offences of rape, attempt to commit culpable homicide, causing grievous hurt and armed robbery were proven beyond reasonable doubt against the accused and therefore sentenced them to death by hanging for culpable homicide; life imprisonment for rape and 10 years for causing grievous hurt.

The police had told the court that the accused, in December, 2015, robbed one Josephine Mathew at Waugu village in Shiroro LGA of Niger State with guns, cutlasses, knives and sticks and disposed her of over N1m. (Daily Trust: Text, excluding headline)
