Imo State chapter of the Labour Party (LP) has urged the Federal Government to disband the Imo vigilante group known as Ebubeagu.

A statement issued, yesterday, by the Publicity Secretary of the party, Obidinma Aku, said the party received news that scores of youths were killed in the state by operatives of Ebubeagu, after the victims had attended a traditional wedding ceremony.

The statement said: “The LP in Imo has noted, with shock, the cold blooded massacre of innocent youths returning from a traditional marriage ceremony in Otulu in Oru West Local Council and Awo in Oru East Council of Imo on Sunday, July 17, 2022, by the Ebubeagu security outfit working for the All Progressives Congress (APC) led government in the state.”

The LP said the security group was operating in a manner, which remained unchecked.

The statement further noted: “The account from the direct relations of these victims whose lives were cut short by the Ebubeagu is heartrending.

Our party finds it difficult to imagine how the APC government in Imo, led by Hope Uzodimma will commission such a security outfit with an unchecked license to kill as it wishes without recourse to the rule of law and supervision by the police as it is obtainable in other climes.

Stories abound in the state, especially in Orlu zone, of extra-judicial killings, rapes, extortions and robberies allegedly perpetrated by Ebubeagu security outfit.”(The Guardian)
