Court in Ilorin sentences fake US military officers to prison

The Federal High Court sitting in Ilorin, Kwara state capital has sentenced Akinrodolu Sunday and George Tobi to prison for posing as United States of America military officers.

The court said that the offences bordered on love scams and other internet-related fraud.

The court also jailed one Oluwajobi Victor also on internet-related fraud.

Ilorin’s zonal command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) dragged the trio before the court.

EFCC said the convicts were among the 34 suspected internet fraudsters arrested in different locations in Ado Ekiti, Ekiti state on March 8, 2021.

Akinrodolu and George were posing to be US military officers to lure unsuspecting victims into an online relationship.

EFCC charged Olujobi for an attempt to defraud people seeking accommodation in the USA.

The defendants admitted to committing the crime and pleaded guilty when the charges were read to them.

EFCC counsel tendered items recovered from the defendants in court printed from their devices.

The items include a Toyota Corolla sports car, iPhones, Ipad and bank draft.

Presiding Judge Sanni sentenced Akinrodolu to six-month imprisonment each on counts one and two with the option of a fine of N300, 000.

The court also ordered the forfeiture of his iPhone 7 and Infinix 55 phone, which he used to perpetrate the crime as well as a Toyota Corolla Sports car acquired with the proceeds of his unlawful activities to the Federal Government.

Also, George was sentenced to six- months imprisonment with an option of a fine of N300,000.

He said that the iPhone 6s recovered from him at the point of arrest was also forfeited to the Federal Government.

Justice Sani sentenced Olujobi to six-month imprisonment with an option of a fine of N300, 000.

He also ordered that the iPhone 6 and IPad Air 2, which the convict used to perpetrate the crime be forfeited to the Federal Government. (The Nation)
