Nine feared dead in attacks on Rivers communities

Nine persons were reportedly killed during gunmen attacks on two communities in Khana Local Government Area of Rivers State.

The affected communities are: Gwara and Kono in Boue Kingdom.

A source close to the communities told reporters the rampaging gunmen invaded the neighbouring communities on Monday afternoon.

He could not ascertain whether the shootings were cult-related or not.

The source informed residents fled the communities before nightfall for fear of possible midnight attacks.

Rivers Police spokesperson, Nnamdi Omoni, Superintendent of Police (SP), could not confirm the incident as at the time of filing this report.

He said he heard about the incident but was yet to receive the report from the DPO in charge of the area.

But the Public Relations Officer of Community Development Community (CDC) of Kono, Boue, Nwibakpo Golden, who spoke on the incident said:

“Gunmen Monday afternoon invaded Gwara community in Boue and killed three persons, they moved from there to Kono also in the same Boue and killed another three. One of those killed was identified as Tonubari Deyoor.

“A motorcycle operator and two of his passengers who ran into the shooters, while coming back from a thanksgiving activity in the area were also shot and killed.”

Asked if the victims were cult members, they said they were not. (The Nation)
