Adebayo Adewole, a former presidential candidate for the Social Democratic Party (SDP), says that the country is moving toward a one-man government, and the All Progressives Congress (APC) is the first victim.
During an interview on Channels TV today, Adewole said this.
People are worried that Nigeria is becoming a one-party state and that there would be a one-party state. Based on what I’ve seen and the data, Nigeria is not moving toward a one-party state. Adewole warned on the breakfast show that Nigeria is in danger of becoming a one-man rule.
“If anyone in the APC thinks that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is trying to help the APC become the dominant party and turn Nigeria into a one-party state, that’s not what he wants to do.” The plan is to have one person in charge.
He says that the APC itself is the first victim of the supposed one-man dictatorship.
“They’re in there, and they’re getting used to not having any internal democracy.” Their commander, who is now the president, tells them what to do, and they are getting used to it.
“They’re not as strong as other political parties in Africa, where the people in the party and the processes are stronger than the people in the government. The leaders of the party are in charge of measuring, supervising, and performing government,” he said.
Several opposition parties are battling a leadership crisis, with different groups laying claims to positions.
But Adewole wants them to “try as hard as they can to make fewer mistakes and stop fighting with each other, and to work together to run their party.”
He said that every party has one or two things that will probably act as a saboteur.
His comment comes after a lot of politicians, including governors, members of the National Assembly, and others, switched to the APC.
The ruling party already has more than 31 governors and a huge majority in the National Assembly.
With less than a year until the general elections, critics say that this move will spell disaster for the country’s democracy.
