The African Democratic Congress (ADC) says it would run in the 2027 general election on its own platform, even though the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has stopped recognizing the party’s leadership because of a court injunction.
Bolaji Abdullahi, the ADC National Publicity Secretary, was a guest on Channels Television last night. He said he was sure that the opposition party would get through all of the problems that lay ahead.
Abdullahi added, “I can promise you that we will run for the ADC in the 2027 election.”
“We still trust the courts, no matter what has transpired in Nigeria. We think we have a strong case. We are sure that justice will be done if the court hears our case today and the hearing is sped up. We are sure about that. “We’re hoping for the best, but we’re also getting ready for the worst.”
The spokesperson said that the party had nothing to worry about because it had given INEC the required 21 days’ notice for its congresses. They also said, “If the same INEC that swore in an affidavit that it knew about the leadership change in the ADC is now saying what they are saying, they are not going to stop us.”
He made it clear that the party would not give up easily, saying that doing so would mean they were helping to destroy Nigeria’s multiparty democracy.
Worries about a one-party state
Abdullahi said that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and President Bola Tinubu want to make Nigeria a one-party state. He promised that the ADC would fight against this.
The African Democratic Congress (ADC) says that Nigeria would not become a one-party state while we are alive. “We will do everything we can within the law to fight it,” he said.
He said that President Tinubu knows he isn’t very popular and that the ruling party’s internal surveys have made them panic.
He remarked, “The APC has almost all the governors and lawmakers, but Nigerians don’t want the party anymore.”
Abdullahi also said that the ruling party is trying to destabilize opposition parties because it wants Tinubu to be the only credible candidate for president in 2027.
“It’s the same plan. They want to make sure that when we get to 2027, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is the only person who can win. This is the plan.
He remarked, “It is the reason they killed the PDP and made it part of the ruling party; it is the reason they destabilized the Labour Party; it is the reason they destroyed the NNPP.”
No Boycott
When asked if the ADC will join certain opposition parties in calling for a boycott of the 2027 election, Abdullahi replied the party would never do that.
“We’re not going to skip out.” To boycott is to give up, as I said. “You boycott, you make news, and then what?” he asked.
He went on to say that the ADC is the hope of millions of Nigerians who have had a hard time over the past three years and will not let them down by not participating in a process that could make their lives better.
Legal Background
In September 2025, Gombe went to the Federal High Court in Abuja to challenge the validity of David Mark and Aregbesola’s NWC.
He said that after Nwosu quit, he should have taken over as leader and that Nwosu’s resignation letter was fake.
INEC took down the names of Mark and Aregbesola as chairman and secretary of the ADC from its website last week. They said they were following a court order to keep things the same.
Abdullahi says that the way the David Mark-led ADC came to power is “clear” and “legal.”
The ADC, which became a coalition party in July 2025, is getting ready to run against President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 election.
Atiku Abubakar, Rotimi Amaechi, Peter Obi, Nasir El-Rufai, and Rabiu Kwankwaso are some of the well-known politicians who support the party.
