Iran has decided to reopen the Strait of Hormuz after a blockage that lasted more than a month and raised fuel prices around the world.
The Strait of Hormuz is a body of water that connects the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman. Iran is on the north shore, and the Musandam Peninsula is on the south coast, according to AFP.
It is one of the most important choke points in the world, measuring around 167 km long. Every year, 20% of the world’s liquefied natural gas (LNG) and 25% of the world’s oil commerce travel through the strait.
After Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif helped broker a temporary peace pact, Iran said, “For a period of two weeks, safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz will be possible via coordination with Iran’s Armed Forces and with due consideration of technical limitations.”
After Trump agreed to a two-week ceasefire, Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi made this announcement.
Trump had already set a deadline of midnight GMT yesterday for Iran to stop blocking the Strait of Hormuz, saying that if it didn’t happen, a whole civilization might be wiped out.
The Iranian Foreign Minister, on the other hand, indicated that his country would “suspend defensive operations” if the United States and Israel stopped attacking.
“Our strong military will stop defending itself if attacks on Iran stop.”
The Supreme National Security Council of Iran said that the war would stop only if the US agreed to the conditions in its 10-point plan.
The security council added, “It is important to note that this (ceasefire agreement) does not mean the end of the war. Iran will only accept the end of the war when the details are worked out in negotiations and the principles outlined in the 10-point plan are accepted.”
Trump said on social media, “After talking with Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Asim Munir, they asked me to hold off on sending the destructive force to Iran tonight. If the Islamic Republic of Iran agrees to the COMPLETE, IMMEDIATE, and SAFE OPENING of the Strait of Hormuz, I will agree to stop bombing and attacking Iran for two weeks.”
“This will be a CEASEFIRE on both sides!” We are doing this because we have already reached and exceeded all of our military goals. We are also very close to reaching a final agreement on long-term peace with Iran and peace in the Middle East.
“We got a 10-point proposal from Iran and think it’s a good place to start negotiations.” The US and Iran have agreed on almost all of the issues that have caused problems in the past, but it will take two weeks to ratify the Agreement and make it official.
“As President of the United States and as a representative of the Middle Eastern countries, it is an honor to be close to solving this long-term problem.” Thanks for taking the time to read this! “President DONALD J. TRUMP.”
Israel, which has been fighting with Iran since the conflict started on February 28, had not said anything about the pact at the time of this story.
The Prime Minister of Pakistan, on the other hand, said that the ceasefire is in force right away.
“I am very happy to announce that the Islamic Republic of Iran, the United States of America, and their allies have agreed to an immediate ceasefire everywhere, including Lebanon and other places. This is effective right away.”
On Friday, April 10, formal talks will begin in Islamabad, the capital of Pakistan.
