Because the security situation in Jos, Plateau State, has gotten worse, the University of Jos has told students to leave their hostels right once.
Emmanuel Madugu, the Deputy Registrar of Information and Public Relations for the institution, sent out a statement today that included the directive.
The statement said, “Because of the overall security situation in Jos, and especially the near-chaotic situations that happened today (Wednesday, April 1, 2026) in areas near the university that made tensions rise and put the safety of students in the hostels at risk, the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Tanko Ishaya has ordered the immediate evacuation of students from the hostels.”
“HE Barrister Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang, the Executive Governor of Plateau State, is helping with the evacuation by providing transportation. He is fully authorized to do this even during curfew hours.”
Students living in Jos and the surrounding area were told to leave the hostels starting at 3 p.m. today. Students whose parents or guardians live outside the state were told to leave at 8 a.m. tomorrow.
The management assured everyone that the hostels and the school were safe because they had enough protection.
It also told students and other people at the campus to be calm and said that more information would be given as needed.
This happened after a devastating attack on the Angwan Rukuba village that purportedly killed several people and raised tensions across Jos.
The Plateau State government had put a 48-hour curfew in place in Jos North Local Government Area to keep things under control. On Wednesday, though, they lifted the curfew so people could roam around between 7 a.m. and 3 p.m. every day.
But earlier today, there were reports of new panic in some parts of the city as thugs reportedly took advantage of the calm to attack drivers and people.
