The Government of Canada has said that Nigerians and other foreigners who want to live in Canada permanently will have to pay more to apply for permanent residency and citizenship.
An official notification on the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada website that our correspondent saw yesterday said that the additional fees would start on April 30, 2026.

“As part of a regular update, fees for permanent resident applications will go up on April 30, 2026.” It noted, “The new fees will apply to applications received on or after April 30.”
The agency said that the expenses for permanent residency will go up by as little as $25, and the fees for citizenship will go up by about 2.7%.
The fee for the Right of Permanent Residence goes up by $25, from $575 to $600. The fee for the Provincial Nominee Programme goes up by $40, from $950 to $990.
The price for Business Class goes up by $85, from $1,810 to $1,895. The price for Family Class goes up by $25, from $545 to $570.
The charge for a visa on Humanitarian and Compassionate Grounds or Public Policy Measures goes up by $25, from $635 to $660. The fee for Protected Persons also goes up by $25, from $635 to $660.
Starting on March 31, 2026, the fee for the Right of Citizenship will go up from $119.75 to $123, while the fee for Permit Holders will go up from $375 to $390.
IRCC said that the Immigration and Refugee Protection Regulations say that the fees for permanent residency go up every two years to cover the costs of the program and meet the growing demand.
