There was a lot of stress in Anguwan Rukuba, which is in the Jos North Local Government Area of Plateau State. This was because of a terrible shooting that happened last night.
According to Channels TV, it was learned that unknown shooters, who were said to be riding motorcycles, shot and killed an unknown number of young people in the neighborhood.
A resident who talked to our reporter over the phone but didn’t want to be named said the attack happened in the evening at the Anguwan Rukuba crossroads.
“The assailants just rode by and started shooting at random. People were running in separate directions.
After the attack, angry young people reportedly blocked main routes in the area, which made others worry that tensions would rise.
As at the time this story was written, the Commissioner of Police, Bassey Ewah, and the Police Public Relations Officer had not yet answered calls asking for formal confirmation and details on the occurrence.
The most recent attack happened weeks after reports said that at least 20 security personnel and vigilantes were slain when highly armed bandits attacked a joint patrol team in Wanka and the nearby communities of the Garga area in the Kanam Local Government Area of the state.
The Kanam Development Association (KADA) released a statement signed by its Secretary, ND Shehu Kanam, and Chairman, Garba G. Aliyu. They said that 12 security personnel, including two high-ranking military officers, and eight vigilante members who were helping security forces protect the communities were among the victims.
The patrol team, which included military personnel and local vigilantes, was driving through the communities of Garga, Kyaram, and Gyambau in two vehicles as part of their regular security work when they were suddenly attacked by hundreds of heavily armed bandits on their way to Wanka at about 2 p.m. on Friday.
KADA called the killings of the security guards and vigilantes “deeply painful and unacceptable,” pointing out that the fallen agents died while protecting rural areas that have been attacked many times before.
The group further said that after the ambush, the bandits reportedly attacked the Kyaram hamlet, where they stole millions of naira worth of property and stole a lot of cattle from people.
KADA warned that this event was not an isolated one. They said that villages around Garga, Kyaram, Gyambau, and nearby settlements along the borders of Plateau, Taraba, and Bauchi states have been attacked, kidnapped, and had their cattle stolen over the past three to four years.
