Belgian tennis great David Goffin has said that after the 2026 ATP Tour season, he would stop playing professional tennis. This will end a career that has lasted more than ten years.
The 35-year-old, a former world No.7, confirmed his decision in a heartfelt message shared on social media, describing it as one of the most difficult choices of his life after years of competing at the highest level.
Goffin had a tremendous career on the ATP Tour, winning six singles titles and making it to nine more finals. In 2017, he also came in second at the famous ATP Finals, which was one of the best things that had happened to him.
The Belgian made it to the quarterfinals of four Grand Slam tournaments, including the French Open in 2016, the Australian Open in 2017, and Wimbledon in 2019 and 2022. However, he never made it past the last eight.
Goffin is known for being consistent and tough. He won more over 350 matches in his career and beat elite players like Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, and Novak Djokovic.
In the last few years, ailments, especially a long-term knee problem, have hurt his performance and been a big part of why he chose to leave the sport.
Goffin became a professional in 2009 and was also the first Belgian man to break into the ATP Top 10 rankings.
He is anticipated to keep playing until the end of the 2026 season, when he will formally end his career.
