The Nigerian Army reports that more Boko Haram suicide bombers may have sent more than one suicide bomber to Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State, after the city was rocked by multiple explosions last night.
The spokesperson for Operation Hadin Kai claimed today that suspected Boko Haram suicide bombers planned the strikes.
He claimed, “The explosions were done by suspected Boko Haram terrorist suicide bombers who set off homemade bombs in three different places in the city.”
“The cowardly attacks were aimed at busy public places in an effort by the terrorists to kill a lot of people and cause fear in the city.
“Early reports suggest that the terrorists may have sent several suicide bombers into Maiduguri with the goal of carrying out coordinated suicide bombings in crowded areas.”
He also said that security personnel have stepped up their surveillance, patrols, and counter-IED efforts across the city to find the last of the suspects.
Uba stated that troops, along with the Nigeria Police Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) squad and other security agencies, quickly responded to the incident by securing and blocking off the affected areas to keep them safe.
He said that emergency response teams, including people from the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and other medical service providers, quickly took the injured to the General Hospital, Specialist Hospital, and the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital for urgent medical care.
He told people to stay calm but alert, stay away from busy places when they can, and report any strange people, things, or actions to the local security agency right away.
According to official reports, at least 23 individuals died in the explosions and 108 more were hurt afterward.
The explosions went off about 7:24 PM and hit a big market, the gate of the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, and the Post Office overpass.
