Omoyele Sowore, a human rights activist, led a protest in Aba yesterday. He asked the federal government to free Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), who is now in jail.
Reports from Channels TV say that members of the pro-Kanu organization and other supporters congregated in parts of the commercial metropolis, especially around the Ariaria International Market area. They sang songs of support and held signs calling for Kanu’s freedom.
The protesters said they were protesting to get the attention of people in Nigeria and around the world to what they called the continuing arrest of the IPOB leader.
They also said that their campaign to free Kanu would go on peacefully.
Eyewitnesses, on the other hand, reported that security personnel later broke up the protests after being sent to the area to keep the peace.
