Carney Chukwuemeka of Borussia Dortmund has changed his international eligibility from England to Ralf Rangnick’s Austria ahead of the World Cup.
Austria has qualified for the World Cup finals for the first time since 1998. In the group stage, they will play defending champions Argentina, Algeria, and Jordan, according to AFP.
Chukwuemeka, who used to play for Chelsea and Aston Villa, was born in Austria but migrated to England as a child. He played for the Three Lions in all the youth divisions but never got a senior cap.
FIFA revised the 22-year-old’s status late yesterday. He might play for Austria in the next friendly against Ghana and South Korea in March.
The midfielder started out in the youth divisions at Villa and then moved to Chelsea in 2022. In early 2025, he went on loan to Dortmund, and in the summer, his deal became permanent.
Chukwuemeka has scored two goals in 20 league outings for Dortmund this season.
Paul Wanner, a 20-year-old midfielder who used to play for Bayern Munich and now plays for PSV Eindhoven, moved from Germany to Austria on the same day.
