The St. Mary Catholic Cathedral in Wukari, Taraba State, has been devastated by fire.
According to Daily Trust, the incident entirely destroyed the church edifice.
Fr. John Laikei, who is in charge of communications for the Catholic Diocese of Wukari, claimed that the fire started last night, just after the power came back on in the region where the church is located.
He called the event a “major setback” for the diocese and said that members were still in shock at what had happened.
Fr. Laikei noted that the specific cause of the fire is still unknown.
“But I can confirm that it happened at the same time as the power came back on. He also remarked, “I must tell you that the authorities have not yet looked into how bad the fire was.”
It was learned that the situation got worse because there were no working fire trucks in Wukari. Members of the church could only watch as the fire burned the whole building.
It was only a month after a fire damaged the Wukari Local Government Secretariat that the St. Mary Catholic Cathedral caught fire.
Several fires happened in Jalingo, the state capital, in January, February, and March. These fires destroyed shops, a market, and homes.
But no one died in the episodes.
Earlier reports said that Governor Agbu Kefas formed a commission to look into the fires that keep happening in Jalingo and other parts of the state.
