Two men have been condemned to death by hanging by a Kano State High Court for killing a groom during a robbery in Kano state.
Aliyu Hussaini and Amir Zakariyya, who live in Sheka Sabuwar Abuja Quarters and Unguwar Malam Quarters in the Kumbotso Local Government Area, were found guilty of conspiracy, armed robbery, and culpable homicide in connection with the killing of Yazid Haruna.
According to Daily Trust, Justice Amina Adamu-Aliyu said that the prosecution had proven its case beyond a reasonable doubt and called the attack “brutal and deeply troubling.”
She was also worried about how many violent robberies that had to do with stealing cell phones are happening in some sections of the state.
The prosecution, lead by Barrister Lamido Abba-Sorondinki, says that the crime happened at about 2:47 a.m. on June 11, 2025, in Sheka Sabuwar Abuja Quarters.
The court heard that the accused planned the attack and got long knives and a machete before going after the victim.
They are said to have stolen two cell phones and N19,500 from Haruna during the attack.
He was stabbed several times and later died from his wounds.
The prosecution brought in three witnesses and medical reports to back up its case.
The defendants said they were not guilty.
Their lawyer, Barrister Haruna Saleh-Zakariyya, brought them to court to testify in their own defense and asked the judge to be lenient.
Justice Adamu-Aliyu found the defendants guilty under Sections 97(1), 298(c), and 221(a) of the Penal Code Laws of Kano State.
The court gave each of the criminals a year in jail for conspiracy, life in prison for armed robbery, and death by hanging for culpable homicide.
In a related case, the same convicts were given the death penalty by another Kano State High Court on October 20, 2025, for killing a teacher during a different phone-related heist.
