Pope Leo XIV has asked Catholic groups to put a direct stream of official Vatican news on their websites. This is because the Holy See is dealing with a lot of AI-generated information.
Today, Vatican News, the Holy See’s official news source, said that the pope had written to bishops asking them to use the stream on websites for parishes, dioceses, and Catholic associations.
The websites will be able to provide a constantly updating feed of official Vatican films of the pope, as well as speeches, announcements, texts, and news from official Vatican sources in 40 different languages.
The pope wrote to bishops and said that it was a “tool of evangelization” and “a way for your parishes and communities to always get information from the primary source.”
After Leo was elected leader of the Catholic Church in May 2025, we looked into it and found dozens of YouTube and TikTok pages that were posting AI-generated movies and audio that were said to be from the pope.
One Spanish-language video on TikTok had 9.6 million views and claimed to depict Leo lecturing about how important it is to love women. Another one, which had an AI label on it but still tricked people, was seen about 32.9 million times.
Andrea Tornielli, the Vatican’s Dicastery for Communication’s editorial director, said that the new project “can help fight the problem of fake news by giving people quick access to the original source of news and texts.”
