Today, suspected political thugs broke up a meeting of stakeholders for the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Akure, the capital of Ondo State. Several members were hurt, and party leaders had to get away.
Eyewitnesses told The Nation that the attackers, who were carrying broken bottles, planks, machetes, stones, and other deadly things, attacked the party’s secretariat as the meeting was going on.
The attackers reportedly chased people at random, causing chaos at the conference and panic within the building.
The incident happened at a time when tensions were increasing within the ruling party because of the upcoming ward, local government, and state congresses to choose new leaders. This was claimed to have made divides within the party worse.
Sources said that party leaders, officials, and delegates had gotten together to talk about things going on inside the party when the violence started.
A party official who didn’t want to be named said that the attackers struck after the members had already settled in.
“We had to run for our lives because they came with guns and started threatening everyone. While trying to get away, some of us got hurt. He said that people who drove to the event quickly departed to keep their cars from getting damaged.
Steve Otaloro, the APC’s Director of Media and Publicity in Ondo State, confirmed the event over the phone and said that more information would be given later.
