After a devastating terrorist strike that reportedly killed more than 176 people last week, people from the Woro community in the Kaiama Local Government Area of Kwara State have fled to Niger State, which is next door.
The onslaught, which happened on Tuesday night and lasted until Wednesday morning, made families leave their houses with little or no personal things. Fear spread throughout the neighborhood and nearby villages.
Sunday PUNCH says that a viral video that our reporter saw yesterday shows displaced people who took shelter in Wawa town, Niger State, gathering by the side of the road.
There were a number of cars parked nearby that were thought to have brought them from Kwara State.
Some of the displaced people were sitting on plastic chairs under a temporary tent, while others were sitting on the ground. Many of them seemed tired as women and children gathered around.
ZulQharnain Musa, the Special Assistant to the Chairman of Kaiama Local Government Area, told Sunday PUNCH that the Woro village had been completely deserted after the incident.
“Saturday saw the whole community go. Musa added that many had fled to nearby villages, including as Niger State, Kaiama town, and some who had escaped through the thick forest had ended up in Baruten.
Musa said that security forces had been sent to the region to bring back peace.
He claimed, “President Bola Tinubu has ordered an army battalion to be stationed in the community right now.”
Musa stated that many locals still didn’t want to go back, even though the military was there. They were afraid of more attacks and weren’t sure about their safety, so whole families are still looking for shelter in host villages.
