The National Working Committee (NWC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), led by Taminu Turaki, has claimed that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) cannot pick the party’s leaders.
This was said by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Ini Ememobong, in response to the INEC’s quarterly meeting with political parties, which was attended by the Abdulraman Mohammed-led National Caretaker Committee (NCC), according to NAN.
“We know that the Independent National Electoral Commission asked the heads of political parties to a meeting today (Thursday).
“We also know that INEC invited certain former members of our party who say they are leading a so-called National Caretaker Committee to represent our party, even though our constitution doesn’t allow for this.
“This action, which is usually annoying and can lead to a lot of violence, will be countered with every legal means possible.
“Even if this is not surprising given the current leadership of INEC, it is expected that an unbiased umpire would have noticed that the cases were still going on in the Court of Appeal.
“This includes the judgment they are relying on, which, when determined, will have a direct impact on the topic at hand; and they held back from doing so.
Ememobong remarked, “We can promise that INEC will not choose a leader for our party.”
He told all PDP members to stay calm and hope that the Court of Appeal would hear and decide all the cases on the party’s leadership as soon as possible.
“We promise that our party’s revival effort, led by the capable Tanimu Turaki, SAN, is steady and safe.
“It will eventually overcome all of these problems and present a stronger and more united party to Nigerians as a credible alternative to the ruling party,” he said.
