Islamic terrorists killed almost 200 people on Wednesday in separate attacks in remote villages in central and northern Nigeria, as confirmed by a Kwara State legislator, residents, and police. The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has asked President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to cancel all of his planned trips abroad in 2026 so that his government can focus on fighting terrorism and defeating the terrorists.
HURIWA also said that the president is too focused on the politics of the 2027 general elections. They also said that the All Progressives Congress is to blame for putting the re-election of the current president ahead of everything else, which is making it hard for him to focus on getting good results in the counterterrorism campaigns, according to Daily Independent.
“It is sad that the APC, which is backed by the President, has already started campaigning for the 2027 election in clear violation of the current electoral law. Meanwhile, political office holders from other parties are being blackmailed, cajoled, and forced to join the president’s party and even start campaigns for the re-election of President Tinubu out of fear of being prosecuted by the EFCC.”
HURIWA, a group that fights for democracy and civil rights, said it is “inexplicably shocking” that President Tinubu spent 22 days outside of Nigeria in January 2026 and traveled around the world last year. They also said that the bilateral agreements he signed on his foreign trips have had little or no economic benefit for millions of poor Nigerians, even though thousands of Nigerians have been killed by terrorists.
The murders illustrate that the government isn’t working properly and that the president isn’t doing his job of protecting the lives and property of the people, which is the government’s main constitutional duty.
“We also believe that governors who don’t have what it takes to work with the police to keep their people safe should give up. The governor of Kwara state has not done his job as required by the constitution.
The legislator for the area, Saidu Baba Ahmed, claimed by phone, “Gunmen attacked the Woro Community in central Kwara State on Tuesday, killing at least 170 people.”
It was the bloodiest attack in the territory that borders Niger State this year. Gunmen are increasingly targeting this area, raiding villages, kidnapping people, and stealing cattle.
Ahmed reported that the gunmen gathered people, tied their wrists behind their backs, and killed them. The congressman sent Reuters pictures of dead bodies, but the agency couldn’t confirm them right away.
He added that villagers ran into the wilderness around the village during the raid. The gunmen set fire to homes and stores.
Ahmed stated, “I’m in the village right now with soldiers, sorting through dead bodies and looking for more in the area.”
He said that some persons were still missing on Wednesday morning.
Residents told Reuters that during a lecture, the gunmen ordered people to stop being loyal to the Nigerian state and switch to Sharia Islamic law. The militants shot at the locals when they pushed back.
HURIWA is saying that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu should cancel all of his planned trips to other countries so that he can lead Nigeria’s armed forces in the fight against terrorism. HURIWA also says that the heads of the security agencies that President Tinubu appointed must sign social contract performance forms that outline the goals they must meet in the fight against terrorism or they will be fired within a certain amount of time.
Comrade Emmanuel Nnadozie Onwubiko, the National Coordinator, said that HURIWA is angry that the heads of the security institutions in Kwara state haven’t been punished even though 200 people were killed by Islamists. They made huge mistakes in security and intelligence that let Islamic terrorists kill Nigerians in cold blood.
