Aare Afe Babalola, a well-known lawyer and the founder of Afe Babalola University, Ado-Ekiti (ABUAD), has said that the university is ready to find a permanent answer to treating cancer.
Babalola said during the signing of a big Memorandum of Understanding with the Chinese company Cherami-PV Group that the institution is ready to use AI-powered tools to find and treat breast cancer early, according to the Daily Independent.
The creator stated that with enough research, teamwork, and willpower, cancer, like other complicated diseases, could be beaten.
He stated, “With the partnership, a cure for cancer is possible,” calling the disease one of the biggest health problems facing humanity.
Professor Smaranda Olarinde, the Vice Chancellor of ABUAD, said that the goal of the alliance was to help solve one of Nigeria’s biggest public health problems.
Prof. Olarinde added that the cooperation would use AI-powered breast imaging to make early diagnosis better, increase accuracy, and make quality screening more widely available. He stressed that technology would not replace medical skill, but rather work with it.
The VC who called the alliance a paradigm for effective cooperation between academics, healthcare, and industry said that the project’s pilot phase will make sure that it followed ethical guidelines, built capacity, and used evidence-based methods.
She was sure that the relationship would provide measurable advantages to Ekiti State, serve as a model for other partnerships in Nigeria and Africa, and, in the end, help save lives, spread knowledge, and make global partnerships stronger.
Dr. Akinola Akinmade, the CMD of ABUAD Hospital, gave the technical specifics of the deal. He said that every year, over 32,000 women are diagnosed with the condition, and at least 16,000 of them die, which is 42 women every hour.
He said that cancer is one of the most common causes of death in Nigeria, and that breast cancer is especially dangerous for women.
Akinmade noted that early detection was still very important to stopping the bad trend. He added that the relationship between ABUAD and the Cherami-PV group will use artificial intelligence to make diagnoses faster and more accurately.
The CMD also said that the program would add telemedicine support to ABUAD’s existing staff, help doctors make better decisions, and help healthcare workers grow their skills.
Prof. Wei Xiaolin, one of the founders of Cherami Investment, was very happy with the relationship. He said that ABUAD is one of the best academic and medical institutions in Sub-Saharan Africa.
He noted that the choice to work with ABUAD was based on the university’s unmatched reputation for being innovative, doing great research, and always providing top-notch healthcare services.
He also said that the relationship between Cherami Investment and ABUAD was based on shared principles and a common goal to tackle important health problems, especially cancer.
